The giant glowing rabbits of Intrude have been hopping around the planet since 2014 and I am very proud to have one of it's largest incarnations, whom we lovingly refer to as Bertha, attend the Fine Minds for Fine Wines event at Chene Bleu this June. At 10m high, this rabbit will look so lovely sitting amongst the ancient vines by day and by night she will be a beacon in the region.
My artwork aims to raise awareness about the fragility of nature and the part that we play as it's stewards.
Why rabbits? In my native Australia, the rabbit is an introduced, feral species. Just several of these animals were brought by the European settlers a little over 200 years ago for food and sport. Since that time the rabbit has become out of control so much so that it decimates the habitats of native flora and fauna wherever it goes.
Don't misunderstand, I love rabbits, they are innocent in the scenario. Rather their status as a feral animal is due to our lack of forethought of our effect. Therefore I use the rabbit as a metaphor for our mismanagement of the environment. The cuteness and innocence characteristic of the animal, is used as a strategy to entice the viewer into the serious themes in the artwork. Besides, a giant bunny in a landscape is funny!
It is this environmental awareness that connects my artwork themes with the ethical methodology of the wine making practices at the Chene Bleu.
